I've been reading a lot of forum posts and products specs about products that will enable me to stream video and iTunes
audio between my home devices:
- 2 laptops
- 2 tvs
And I can't find an all-in-one solution. If I spend more time reading specs, I may be able to find seperate products that will
do what I need. But that's going to cost a lot more than buying the right all-in-one device.
My thoughts on a solution:
- a DLNA receiver for both tvs that will receive video and audio wirelessly and connect to tv via HDMI
- a configurable and updateable NAS that also works as an AirPlay enabled router
But I don't know which NAS box I should buy or if it is the right way to go. I need tips on what to buy and why that's a good
solution to my needs.
-----------------------
I have:
MacBook Pro OS X 10.6 laptop with minidisplay port
Acer Windows XP laptop with VGA and s-video port
Living rooom: Philips 42" digital tv, external speakers, without DLNA but lots of connections eg. HDMI
Bedroom: Philips 22" digital tv, build-in speakers, without DLNA but lots of connections eg. HDMI.
Living room: Denon DRA-F102DAB hi-fi
-----------------------
Currently:
- I play videos from my laptop
- through the minidisplay port with a minidisplay to HDMI converter and a long cable connectes to tv via HDMI
- audio doesn't go out through the minidisplay port, and as far as I can google my MacBook Pros minidisplay port version
doesn't support audio
- audio goes out through minijack directy to tv or Denon hi-fi
That's means I have to move stuff around and connect cables to watch a movie from my laptop on one of the tvs.
-----------------------
I need a solution for:
A central storage solution:
- that I can access from both laptops
- use for backups
- that can download torrents
- ports to connect extra harddisks via USB
- browse video on NAS with remote
- browse music on NAS with remote
- preferably view browsing on tv (but laptop also okay)
Video streaming solution:
- play video in a wide range of formats (mostly .mts 720p, 1080i or 1080p)
- codec independance
- stream to both tvs (on at a time)
- both video and audio through HDMI if possible (what do I need to check?)
- wi-fi distance between devices: max. 20 meters
AirPlay solution:
- stream music from iTunes on both laptops to Denon hi-fi
- (optionally also stream music from NAS to Denon)
I think that's pretty basic home user needs. Right?
-----------------------
I don't need:
- Netflix access
- streaming from online services
- online radio channels
- to view my holiday photos on my tv
- a playstation, Xbox or any gaming hardware
- to play DVDs or Blu-Rays
-----------------------
Notes:
I really want to be codec independant. Like my laptop can play anything with the right software (usually VLC), I need a NAS
or Home Theatre solution that can do the same.
I'm quite tech and computer savvy and don't mind complex tweaking. But I would prefer not to set up a Linux HTPC on my
own. That may be over my head. And I don't have a spear computer around.
The final "browse and play movie" solution needs to be user friendly so my girlfriend can use it.
I have limited but some access to configurations on my Netgear wireless router from ISP.
Both TVs currently receive their signal via long coax cables. I get internet and tv through telephone cables from Danish
provider YouSee. If it's possible to send a video signal from a NAS via those cables that's also an option for me.
You can answer in Danish if you prefer :-)
